BioIndustry e.V.
BioIndustry e.V. is a regional life science cluster committed to the promotion of biotechnology in science, research and application. The cluster’s regional focus is the Ruhr Metropolis and eastern Westphalia. BioIndustry synergizes the activities of local technology centers, companies and academic research groups to strengthen the field of Biotechnology and Bioeconomy and to generate product and process innovations through interdisciplinary transfer work. Within the current project KLIC.Ruhr (Kompetenzverbund Life Sciences.Ruhr), which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, an online platform is established where universities and companies can offer and share their special equipment and services. Thereby start ups gain easy and cost-efficient access to devices and methods. KLIC.Ruhr aims to improve the communication between science and industry and to adapt scientific research to economic needs in an early stage. In a long-term goal through interdisciplinary transfer activities new product- and process innovations will be generated within the Ruhr area.

EEDEN
Textile recycling is currently the biggest unsolved problem in the fashion industry.” (Handelsblatt) Every second, a truckload of used textiles is incinerated or landfilled. As a result, an annual loss of raw materials amounting to more than €80 billion arises. At the same time, new resources are being cultivated for the ever-growing textile fiber production, leaving an enormous ecological footprint.
For this reason, both consumers and politicians are demanding more sustainability and recycling from fashion brands. However, they do not have the materials to meet this demand.
EEDEN enables the textile industry to use high-quality recycled materials. By using a green-chemical upcycling process, EEDEN extracts cellulose from waste cotton textiles. This cellulose can be seamlessly integrated into existing lyocell/viscose production. In this way, EEDEN transforms the textile industry into a resource-efficient cycle and enables your old clothing to be turned into new high-quality apparel again.

Energiency
Our vision: to create a more efficient and sustainable industry 4.0
Industry still generates 20% of the world’s CO2 emissions, largely due to factories’ energy usage. For industry, it is no longer a simple option to generate energy savings but a requirement. However, it remains a significant challenge, as it is getting harder to undertake successful energy efficiency projects that promise an acceptable ROI.
Data is already being widely collected within factories, but there is still a lot of underused potential. This is why we created Energiency: we wanted to roll out artificial intelligence in a highly operational, accessible way, to help Operators and Energy Managers save energy and reduce their CO2 emissions on a daily basis.

Montello
Montello S.p.A. is located in an industrial area of approximately 450,000 square meters, of which 120,000 are covered.
Up until the end of 1995 it was a steel industry for the production of reinforcing steel bars.
In 1996, after repeated crises in the national steel industry, the decision was to close the steel industry company (Brown Economy), converting the plant into recovery and recycling of packaging waste in post-consumer plastic and organic waste from separate waste collection (Green Economy) which, at that time, began to become popular in Lombardy.
And that is how the concept of waste/resource towards a Circular Economy begins.
With this production reconversion, today the company Montello S.p.A. employs 650 people (compared to the 320 who were employed at the time of the closure of the steel industry company).
At the moment, the factory in Montello (BG) recycles 200,000 tons a year of post-consumer plastic packaging from which new products are obtained, and 600,000 tons a year of OFMSW Organic Fraction deriving from the separate collection from which biogas is obtained, used to produce both electric and thermal energy and biomethane, at the same time recovering CO2 carbon dioxide for industrial technical use and producing a high quality organic fertilizer.
The company has obtained, over the years, ISO 9001,
ISO 14001, ISO 18001 and ISO 50001 certifications. From the month of October 2017 the company has also obtained certification in sustainability of biomethane produced for automotive use.

Petroleum products (like plastics and synthetics) have scaled to support a high standard of living for only ~20% of the world’s population. Less than 10% of plastic has ever been recycled. Continuing to scale this linear fossil fuel economy is unsustainable and expensive.
By contrast, regenerative agriculture can produce differentiated raw materials for ~7.5 billion people while sequestering legacy carbon.
Clean energy is not the only factor in transitioning away from fossil fuels. Some of the most intractable challenges in improving sustainability and raising global standards of living come down to materials—materials that we wear, sit and stand on, and live in.

Rester
Finland, like other countries, generates huge amounts of textile waste. An estimated amount of 350 million kg of used textiles are disposed, as waste annually in the Nordic region. Finland’s share of this is around 100 million kg, of which about 80% is incinerated at the end of it’s life-cycle. This amount includes textiles used by both consumers and businesses. An EU directive, to be transposed into Finnish law as the new 2025 Waste Act, will oblige municipalities to set up and organise the collection of domestic used textiles. This in order to boost the quality of secondary raw material and its uptake.
The circular economy facility being built by Rester Oy in Paimio aims to ensure that businesses can dispose their end of life cycle textiles sustain-ably. The facility will focus on producing new raw material from used textiles with an annual capacity of 6,000 tonnes. Time-frame for the completion of this high-tech facility is Q1/2021. This is an significant project on European level thus enabling a completely new circular and sustainable economy service model for processing companies’ operating in the New Nordics

The technology has the advantage that as direct solar radiation increases, so does the efficiency of the facilities. The facilities are also characterised by a high degree of flexibility. They can be combined with all other fossil and renewable energy sources and are thus base-load capable. Another plus is the option of producing electricity and process heat at the same time or independently of one another. In addition, the residual heat can be used for further industrial applications for example desalination and cooling.
