Textile recycling is currently the biggest unsolved problem in the fashion industry.” (Handelsblatt) Every second, a truckload of used textiles is incinerated or landfilled. As a result, an annual loss of raw materials amounting to more than €80 billion arises. At the same time, new resources are being cultivated for the ever-growing textile fiber production, leaving an enormous ecological footprint.

For this reason, both consumers and politicians are demanding more sustainability and recycling from fashion brands. However, they do not have the materials to meet this demand.

EEDEN enables the textile industry to use high-quality recycled materials. By using a green-chemical upcycling process, EEDEN extracts cellulose from waste cotton textiles. This cellulose can be seamlessly integrated into existing lyocell/viscose production. In this way, EEDEN transforms the textile industry into a resource-efficient cycle and enables your old clothing to be turned into new high-quality apparel again.

Energiency

Our vision: to create a more efficient and sustainable industry 4.0

Industry still generates 20% of the world’s CO2 emissions, largely due to factories’ energy usage. For industry, it is no longer a simple option to generate energy savings but a requirement. However, it remains a significant challenge, as it is getting harder to undertake successful energy efficiency projects that promise an acceptable ROI.

Data is already being widely collected within factories, but there is still a lot of underused potential. This is why we created Energiency: we wanted to roll out artificial intelligence in a highly operational, accessible way, to help Operators and Energy Managers save energy and reduce their CO2 emissions on a daily basis.

As a certified B Corporation, sustainability’s at the heart of our business. We balance profit and purpose, striving for ethical, eco-friendly, transparent production. We’re also committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, around sustainability, responsibility, and innovation.
Packaging that saves trees
Since identifying a gap in the packaging market, we’ve continued to innovate and disrupt. We want to find new ways to move beyond conventional tree-based paper packaging and create a more sustainable future. Our cutting-edge products show that you can shift from a disposable to a circular culture, while still offering incredible quality.

Every item of Envopap packaging is recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, marine-degradable, and has a lower carbon footprint than conventional products. Each metric tonne of Envopap helps save 50 trees from being chopped down for paper and packaging production. So far, we’ve saved 760,000+ trees from deforestation.

By 2030, we aim to save 10 million trees across the globe, as well as empowering 1,000+ people through job opportunities and donating profits towards sustainable development.

For our partners in the textile and nonwoven industry, Lenzing’s cellulose and fibers are their starting point to value creation. Together with our customers we develop solutions that add value to their businesses and products. Our relationships, however, expand even further: from B2B to B2C. With consumers’ needs and perspectives in mind, we cooperate with renown fashion brands. While adding value to their business, we ourselves are increasingly acknowledged as a premium consumer brand.

It’s a long way from the forest to the product in the shop. Turning cellulose fiber into a luxuriously soft blouse on a boutique rack or a smart sports outfit with perfect thermal regulation involves numerous stages and specialists. More often than not, these stages and specialists are rather disconnected.

This is where Lenzing plays a key role by doing much more than supplying fibers. All our business customers—spinners, weavers, mills, dye works and converters, but also fashion brands and retailers—highly regard us as their committed, reliable partner because we understand their needs, share insights and think ahead together.

Thus, we support success and profitability of all our customers along the entire value chain. Be it the generation of ideas or the detection of new trends—in any case our specialists are ready to develop individual, tailor-made models for mutually beneficial collaborations.

Actually, this partnership approach creates a truly unique benefit: a shared feeling of togetherness, excitement and mutual appreciation. To us, there is no better way to be successful.

Montello

Montello

Montello S.p.A. is located in an industrial area of approximately 450,000 square meters, of which 120,000 are covered.
Up until the end of 1995 it was a steel industry for the production of reinforcing steel bars.

In 1996, after repeated crises in the national steel industry, the decision was to close the steel industry company (Brown Economy), converting the plant into recovery and recycling of packaging waste in post-consumer plastic and organic waste from separate waste collection (Green Economy) which, at that time, began to become popular in Lombardy.

And that is how the concept of waste/resource towards a Circular Economy begins.
With this production reconversion, today the company Montello S.p.A. employs 650 people (compared to the 320 who were employed at the time of the closure of the steel industry company).

At the moment, the factory in Montello (BG) recycles 200,000 tons a year of post-consumer plastic packaging from which new products are obtained, and 600,000 tons a year of OFMSW Organic Fraction deriving from the separate collection from which biogas is obtained, used to produce both electric and thermal energy and biomethane, at the same time recovering CO2 carbon dioxide for industrial technical use and producing a high quality organic fertilizer.

The company has obtained, over the years, ISO 9001,
ISO 14001, ISO 18001 and ISO 50001 certifications. From the month of October 2017 the company has also obtained certification in sustainability of biomethane produced for automotive use.

Montello S.p.A. is an example of excellence, both nationally and internationally, for an integrated system and applied advanced technology.

The Cat-HTR™ technology is a chemical recycling solution that uses supercritical water to convert this plastic waste into useful chemicals and oils. These can then be used to create new plastic products – reducing the need for fossil resource, keeping plastic out of the environment and contributing to a low-carbon, plastic neutral and sustainable future.

NFW® develops new manufacturing routes and material chemistry to unlock new levels of performance for natural materials. We believe that with the right science, anything synthetics can do, plants can do better.

Petroleum products (like plastics and synthetics) have scaled to support a high standard of living for only ~20% of the world’s population. Less than 10% of plastic has ever been recycled. Continuing to scale this linear fossil fuel economy is unsustainable and expensive.

By contrast, regenerative agriculture can produce differentiated raw materials for ~7.5 billion people while sequestering legacy carbon.

Clean energy is not the only factor in transitioning away from fossil fuels. Some of the most intractable challenges in improving sustainability and raising global standards of living come down to materials—materials that we wear, sit and stand on, and live in.

PLANTICS

PLANTICS

Plantics develops superior natural materials based on a revolutionary invention of the University of Amsterdam. This invention led to a unique new family of 100% biobased thermoset resins and the world’s first 100% biobased thermoset materials.  In close collaboration with strong market partners, these materials are used to develop and produce high quality, circular, and CO2 negative products for a variety of applications:

  • Composites: hereby the resins act as a binder. For example, in wood panels or other (natural) fiber-based composites.
  • Packaging: hereby molded paper is coated with the bio-resins. For example, on plant pots and food containers.
  • Foams: hereby the resins are used as base material for biofoams. For example, for (sound) insulation applications in the construction industry.

Plantics is being recognized as one of the most promising biomaterials companies. It has received several prestigious international awards and grands such as the European Forum of Biobased Industries Pitch Fest award and a European SME Horizon 2020 grand. Recently, Plantics has been elected together with its partner ‘Vepa the furniture factory’ as the winner of the global innovation award ‘Renewable Material of the Year 2021’.

Rester

Rester

Finland, like other countries, generates huge amounts of textile waste. An estimated amount of 350 million kg of used textiles are disposed, as waste annually in the Nordic region. Finland’s share of this is around 100 million kg, of which about 80% is incinerated at the end of it’s life-cycle. This amount includes textiles used by both consumers and businesses. An EU directive, to be transposed into Finnish law as the new 2025 Waste Act, will oblige municipalities to set up and organise the collection of domestic used textiles. This in order to boost the quality of secondary raw material and its uptake.

The circular economy facility being built by Rester Oy in Paimio aims to ensure that businesses can dispose their end of life cycle textiles sustain-ably. The facility will focus on producing new raw material from used textiles with an annual capacity of 6,000 tonnes. Time-frame for the completion of this high-tech facility is Q1/2021. This is an significant project on European level thus enabling a completely new circular and sustainable economy service model for processing companies’ operating in the New Nordics
