by | Apr 10, 2024

Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) has made a significant contribution to the food packaging industry, in the form of a 100% recycled PET (rPET) food packaging tray. This new product has been manufactured through deriving exclusively from trays and it is a very large milestone within this industry.

For a very long time, trays that are designed for packaging food have been created through the use of recovered PET material. However, kp have now taken the first step towards changing this, as they have been able to make a food tray which is fully manufactured from recycled tray material. The company have been able to do this through their Tray2Tray® initiative work, which the company has specifically stated, was put together in order to make a permanent change to rules around PET recycling.

This new change directly addresses the swiftly rising customer concerns, that focus on bringing sustainable packaging solutions into the industry. Through this launch and further dedication, kp has made it clear that the company will continue to push towards a more sustainable future, when it comes to packaging. This dedication is supported by the launch of this 100% rPET tray, as this project aligns with the company’s ‘packaging with integrity’ ethos. The packaging also displays the company’s clear goal to continue on their journey which is dedicated to creating more sustainable packaging and furthermore, to create packaging for the industry which does not compromise on quality or safety.

It is through the creation of this tray that customer’s concerns around sustainable packaging has been addressed and it is now possible for consumers to access a fully circular tray solution, that is suitable for food packaging. On top of the benefits for the customers, the kp supply chain is also RecyClass certified, which guarantees safety, traceability and quality for all of the company’s PCR packaging solutions. Businesses will also be able to reap the benefits of this new tray, as the 100% kp Tray2Tray® packaging will help businesses to control any costs that are related to eco taxes or plastic tax legislations. The tray will also provide help to businesses that are seeking a way to advance their ESG strategies.

President, Food Packaging at kp, Thomas Kure Jakobsen, commented, “As a bold innovator, we are thrilled to introduce the first-ever 100% rPET tray to the market.” He continued, “This achievement is a major breakthrough in the packaging industry, and perfectly demonstrates what is possible with the right combination of expertise and technology. Most rPET in the material loop comes from plastic bottles, of which just 30% goes into food packaging trays, and most of this does not end up being recovered. As a result, countless tonnes of rPET tray material are wasted each year. kp Tray2Tray® challenges this by creating a robust closed loop system of PET flake from trays. We work with suppliers to create a separate supply stream of recycled PET from trays, which can be used to create more of the same, rather than being downcycled.”

Jakobsen also mentioned, “We’re not just looking to move the needle on plastic tray sustainability; we’re aiming to begin the next era. One of the biggest advantages of partnering with kp and using kp Tray2Tray® content is that it’s a perfect ‘drop in’ solution, so switching over is easy, and packaging performance isn’t compromised. Our 100% kp Tray2Tray® packaging is a real, workable tray that offers a glimpse into the future of tray packaging circularity.”
