Borogue and Abu Dhabi waste management centre have created a partnership to explore the possibilities of recycling waste into high-quality polymers

Borogue, which is made up of a joint venture between ADNOC, the United Arab Emirates oil company, and Austria’s Borealis, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi’s waste management centre, Tadweer. The purpose of this MoU is to explore the opportunities and possibilities within the waste management industry, particularly looking into if the correct management and adoption of processes is being used, such as, sorting and mechanical recycling of polymers.

Tadweer is a petrochemical and polymer manufacturer which is based out in Abu Dhabi, and it has an annual capacity of 5 million tons of polyolefins, with the current plan being to increase this to 6.4 million tons by 2025. In 2021 Tadweer took a step towards this goal through adding recyclates to its facilities, which during the time period it was installed in, put this manufacturer ahead in Abu Dhabi as the country’s plastic recycling business was only just beginning at this time. The recycling path has continued to evolve and the country has placed a ban on single use plastic bags which will be effective in January 2024 and have also put out a ban of plastic cutlery, drinks cups, boxes and Styrofoam to be effective by January 2026. This highlights how the goals the partnership was formed over, align with the goals the country has set out overall.

The top priorities for this partnership are to research and experiment with different waste sorting and mechanical recycling technologies, with the aim of producing high-quality polymer recyclates. Another priority is linked to the first one, and that is to establish and gain business development and benchmarking frameworks. The companies aim to do this through joint investments in foreign countries. The final aim for this partnership is to raise awareness within the public sector about the best practises in plastic waste management and recycling through things like campaigns and public initiatives.

The Chief Executive Officer of Borogue, Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, said, “We are very pleased to collaborate with Tadweer to promote and implement stronger circular economy initiatives in the UAE. Together, we are exploring innovative ways of sorting and recycling polymers in alignment with national and international best practices.”
