Chlorophyll Water develops 100% recycled plastic bottles

by | Oct 31, 2023

It has been announced that Chlorophyl Water is the first bottled water to pass the strict Clean Label Project certification requirements in the United States. The company has achieved this through manufacturing their bottle out of 100% recycled plastics (rPET) using CleanFlake technology.

The manufacturing process for these bottles, follows all the correct procedures and has a plastic free water bottle, which comes with multiple other benefits as the product for the company to display for its efforts. The rPET going into the bottle is made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which has been recycled and treated until it matches the food-grade requirement for rPET. The process utilises the technologies approved by the US FDA and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to recycle the material for these bottles. This recycled material is then re-purposed into a new PET bottle, which has multiple benefits for the environment, especially when looking at a closed-loop system, but the bottle also reduces the amount of plastic waste, through reducing the need for virgin plastic which would be used for manufacturing PET bottles.

Furthermore, transitioning to rPET reduces plastic waste, as well as reducing Co2 emissions which would otherwise be emitted throughout the entire process. Studies have provided evidence that the use of rPET can reduce carbon emissions by up to 79% in comparison to new materials. Whilst this is an excellent and innovative step towards reducing the amount of plastic waste and Co2 emissions in the environment, Chlorophyll Water continued to research how they could make their bottles even more environmentally friendly. After discovering Avery Dennison’s CleanFlake label technology, Chlorophyll Water opted to have their label designed by Avery, which would result in the improvement of the yield of high-quality, food grade PET during the recycling process.

CleanFlake technology operates through using a water-based adhesive technology which separates easily from PET during the washing stage of the recycling process. There is no adhesive residue remaining on the package after it has been washed, which means the recycling loop can be closed and the plastic can be recycled into recycled PET flakes. Altogether the addition of this material provided by CleanFlake, ensures that Chlorophyll Water’s labels easily separates from the bottle during the recycling process and this increases the yields of pure PET flakes.

Alongside the excellent new design for their bottles, Chlorophyll Water has also been recognised by the Green Business Bureau for their plant-powered purified water which fits into the Bureau’s “Good for the Mind, the Body, and the Planet,” category. The companies’ water is purified extensively, including the addition of Chlorophyll which is a key ingredient and well-known for being the green pigment in plant life. The water goes through a carbon-filter which uses triple filtration and is then UV treated to ensure its purification. Along with the added chlorophyll, each bottle contains vitamins A, B12, C and D which all go towards the aim of enhanced hydration.

This purification process, plus the innovative breakthrough with their bottle designs, has led Chlorophyll Water to be awarded the Clean Label Project Certification, with specific mentions of their purification process, commitment to quality ingredients and mountain spring water source.

Founder, Matt Levine, commented, “As a brand, Chlorophyll Water® is committed to sustainability and implementation of new ideas and technology which can improve the impact that packaging has on our environment, in utilizing bottles made from 100% recycled plastic, our intention is to make a meaningful environmental impact – addressing the plastic waste challenge, minimizing our use of virgin, fossil-fuel based packaging.”

MPH, MS food safety and quality systems engineer and executive director of Clean Label Project, Jaclyn Bowen, added, “Consumers are increasingly concerned about the beverages they put into their bodies and the food they provide for themselves and their families,” “Being Clean Label Project’s first bottled water in the United States to receive certification demonstrates Chlorophyll Water’s commitment to ingredient quality and their purification standards.”
