Coca-Cola’s bottling partner, HBC, starts manufacturing recycled PET bottles

by | Oct 25, 2023

Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company (HBC) who are bottling partners with Coca-Cola, have discovered a creative way to produce bottles for its own products made out of recycled PET. This development is the first time a beverage company within Romania has been able to manufacture a bottle out of rPET for its own packaging.

In order to make this possible the company installed a PET flake decontamination unit in its factory in Ploiesti, Bucharest, after receiving an 11-million-euro investment, 3.5 million of which came from state aid from the Romanian government, to help with the installation and progression of the project. This installation makes this factory the third factory within the Coca-Cola HBC Group to be operational with a decontamination facility, across the Coca-Cola HBC’s 29 markets.

The installation brings multiple benefits, including the ability to produce rPET packaging in abundance. Due to the ability to produce a steady supply of high-quality rPET resin for bottle manufacturing, which has been enable through the new in-house rPET production facility, Coca-Cola HBC Romania is offering rPET for all its soft drinks. The company announced that they will be offering rPET packaging for Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Schweppes, Cappy, Cappy Pulpy, Fuzetea, and Dorna. This is an incredible step forwards and significantly reduces the amount of plastic waste.

The CEO of Coca-Cola HBC Romania, Zoran Bogdanovic, commented, “We are working to produce and deliver our drinks in more sustainable ways and in packaging that has a life beyond its initial use – and Romania is a great example of how we can work collaboratively with our stakeholders and the wider industry to create a circular economy for packaging.”

Looking back at where Coca-Cola was in 2022 compared to this advancement that was recently announced, it becomes incredibly clear just how far the company has come. In 2022, recycled material made up 22% of the PET plastic used across Coca-Cola HBC’s EU and Swiss markets. This investment in Romania, and constant transitions to recycled bottle portfolios for the Coca-Cola HBC markets of Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Ireland and Northern Ireland, show that the company is on track to meet their target of delivering almost 50% rPET use in EU and Swiss markets by the end of 2023. Meeting this target is an excellent development and a project which investors and the company are very interested in meeting, as Coca-Cola is currently one of the highest plastic polluters in the world.
