Klockner Pentaplast’s Kp Elite has been relaunched to continue the drive towards sustainable packaging

by | Nov 21, 2023

Klockner Pentaplast (kp) has decided to relaunch its product which is focused on sustainable packaging, kp Elite. The packaging design will be directed predominantly towards the European fresh protein market and it is being relaunched with the aim of creating a packaging system for the industry which is a fully closed loop.

Kp Elite comes with multiple advantages, two of the most important being that this boundary-breaking modified atmosphere MAP tray is manufactured from 100% recycled PET (rPET) and due to this, it is able to be easily recycled by current PET recycling systems. This is a huge advantage for this plastic-free packaging design, as it means it is the only fully recyclable, lightweight, modified atmosphere mono-material packaging tray. The design was recently certified as 100% recyclable by cross-industry initiative RecyClass. The relaunched design is not only an excellent step forwards for the packaging industry and the environment, through the reduction in the amount of plastic waste the alternative material provides, it also demonstrates that creating end-to-end circularity in protein packaging is both viable and practical.

Alongside the environment, the relaunched form of packaging is beneficial to the product and to consumers as well. Kp Elite brings efficiency and reduced chance for contamination to the processing packaging industry through kp Elite’s unique design. Kp Elite MAP is specifically designed to seal efficiently, through using a hermetic seal, which reduces leaks, whilst also minimising the contamination along with the need to rework or repackage. Plus, the sealing method requires less time and a lower temperature, but will still be sealed efficiently and properly. In order to make this design easy for retailers and consumers to use, the company offers the option of a peelable seal, exceptional clarity and also gives the product a longer shelf life, which consequently enhances the product’s appeal.

On top of all of these benefits and advantages, kp Elite also has the ability to be used with other products manufactured by kp, such as their kp Zapora padless tray, or their kp Flexilid EH 145 R barrier lidding film, which has also been certified as recyclable. By combining all of these products, the company has successfully designed a case-ready MAP solution which is fully recyclable. All of these packaging products and alternative solutions being available from one company is an incredible breakthrough and an excellent drive towards reducing plastic waste and pushing towards a plastic-free, sustainable future.

The Marketing Director at kp, Cecilia Guardado, said, “By communicating kp Elite®’s closed loop credentials, we’re aiming to drive the fresh protein market further than ever before. Packaging circularity is one of the biggest challenges in the protein market, but when combined with our kp Tray2Tray® initiative, kp Elite® takes a vital step forward in reducing waste and promoting a more resource-efficient protein packaging ecosystem. Part of our kp ‘Investing in Better’ sustainability strategy is that we want to make 100% of our packaging solutions recyclable by the end of 2025, and kp Elite® is another crucial step in achieving that. Plus, with our kp Zapora® padless tray technology, we’re able to enhance the consumer experience. We’re ticking a lot of boxes at once. We’ve listened to both our customers and the consumer, to create a solution that can do it all.”

Guardado, added, “We’re on a mission to prove that sustainability and performance can coexist without compromise. Combined with kp Zapora® and kp Tray2Tray®, kp Elite® is a clear example of our commitment to efficiency, performance, and sustainability, particularly in light of the upcoming Plastics Packaging Waste Regulations, which mandate the use of post-consumer recyclate (PCR) in packaging. There are huge benefits, not just for producers, packers and distributors, but also for consumers who value its ease of use and clarity. We work to an ethos of ‘Packaging with integrity’, and our values are made clear through everything we do. kp Elite® is a prime example of this in action; while the industry uses higher PCR or virgin material based on cost, we commit to using 100% PCR where possible – and communicating this on-pack. With this relaunch, we are challenging the conventional choice of Polypropylene (PP) trays for protein packaging and showing a better way forward. We are paving the way for a future where rPET-based kp Elite® leads the industry in sustainable, high-performance packaging.”
