New recyclable packaging solution developed by UPM Speciality Papers and Fazer

by | Apr 4, 2024

It has been revealed that a new kind of packaging has been developed by UPM Speciality Papers and Fazer and this packaging is significant, because it is fully recyclable and it does not have a plastic lining.

The packaging has been designed specifically for Fazer’s Oat Rice Pies and the design that has been chosen involves switching the traditional plastic laminated paper, for a new paper solution. This switch has been made because the paper is easily recyclable, whilst it also provides the same amount of protection that plastic packaging would, as that is the kind of packaging that the rice pies require.

This new packaging design, is not only better for the environment, but it also aligns with Fazer’s Sustainable Packaging Vision, as well as UPM’s Biofore strategy. Furthermore, both companies have been developing this solution for over two years, with their primary focus being to make the packaging recyclable, whilst also providing the correct amount of protection, in order to ensure that the quality of the rice pies remains high.

In a similar fashion to the way that plastic packaging is sealed, the companies have designed the new packaging to function with a barrier and heat seal, but without the additional plastic lamination. Furthermore, the companies design has been proven to be recyclable and 99% of the paper involved can then go onto to create new, recycled products. This is a significant improvement in comparison to the recyclability and re-use of plastic packaging, therefore it is a step forwards for the company, for affected parties and for the environment.

Fazer’s Director of Packaging Development, Piia Soininen-Tengvall, commented, “We are working closely with the packaging value chain to achieve Fazer’s responsible packaging goals. Each partner brings valuable expertise to the development work. This project combined Fazer’s expertise in food production and the production process while also ensuring food safety, with UPM Specialty Papers’ expertise in developing demanding specialty papers. We are impressed with how well the new, easier to recycle packaging protects and preserves the high quality of the Oat Rice Pies until the best before date. The packaging solution works on our existing packaging process and achieves all this by reducing fossil-based materials.”

Senior Manager, Sustainability, UPM Specialty Papers, Susanna Hyrkäs, “Packaging papers have the advantage of being recyclable within a widely established fibre recycling infrastructure. Today, more than 80 percent of the fibre-based packaging material used in Europe is recycled. Our product development is always based on the premise of ensuring recyclability, in addition to ensuring product safety and the required functional properties.”
