Pregis® reveals their innovative PE Foam packaging solution

by | Mar 1, 2024

Pregis is a company that is globally known for their work in protective packaging solutions and the forward-thinking company has recently announced their most recent development. This announcement is about their evolution in PE foam technology, which is well-supported by certified-circular polyethylene resins.

The packaging solutions company is currently involved in a partnership with ExxonMobil, who is a leader in advanced recycling technology. This partnership has led to Pregis being able to manufacture a material that answers consumers’ needs and demands for a material that meets their goals around plastics circularity.

The partnership between ExxonMobil and Pregis for this project was established after the companies have been doing business for a while. ExxonMobil has advanced recycling facilities and its processes are certified through an independent, third-party certification system which is called International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS. It is through consulting this system’s mass balance attribution methodology that ExxonMobil is able to calculate how much certified-circular plastic they have sold to Pregis. Before being sold to Pregis, this plastic begins by being processed through ExxonMobil’s advanced recycling process, which leads to less manufacturing losses and then once it is sold to Pregis, the company uses this plastic to create and produce its foam. This manufacturing process takes place in Hokinsville, KY, and Visalia, Calif, which are also ISCC PLUS certified facilities. It is through combining both companies’ strengths, such as ExxonMobil’s investment in advanced recycling technology and Pregis’ skills for circular design, which pushed this integration of certified-circular resins into use within a circular packaging stream.

The overall goal and advantage to this system, is that Pregis is able to encourage and drive the demand around the use of plastic waste as a valuable feedstock. Alongside this goal, the packaging itself has been created as it was inspired by an aim around consumers being able to use circular plastic products, without losing any high-quality protection qualities that are normally provided by polyethylene foam.

Chief Sustainability Officer at Pregis, Ryan Wolcott, commented, “Incorporating certified-circular resins into protective foam applications is a novel approach achieved through deep collaboration across the value chain. We view advanced recycling technologies and the use of certified-circular resins as one more set of tools that allow us to help tackle the plastic waste challenge. This achievement embodies Pregis’ commitment to plastics circularity.”

ExxonMobil’s Advanced Recycling Market Development Manager, Ray Mastroleo, mentioned, “We recognize the growing consumer demand for solutions that support plastics circularity, particularly in the realm of protective packaging. ExxtendTM technology for advanced recycling and our collaboration with Pregis are testaments to our commitment to help meet this demand, enabling the delivery of more circular products that meet the highest performance and safety standards.”
